Segerstrom's English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) is a parent committee to communicate with the school leadership and school site council about the needs of English Learners and parent engagement. What is an ELAC Committee?
- The English Language Advisory Committee is a committee for the parents of English language learners. It is an advisory committee that works with the principal and the scholastic personnel on English Learner programs and services.
- Schools with 21 students identified as English Learners must have an ELAC Committee.
- A minimum of four meetings per year is required
ELAC and Other Committees
- The DELAC representative is a link between the school and the district.
- ELAC may offer suggestions to the School Site Council about the school wide plan and EIA budget.
Responsibilities
ELAC is an advisory committee which offers suggestions regarding: Scholastic Plan/norms/programs for English Learners
- Needs assessment of the School Plan (survey)
- Annual census of languages in the school (R-30)
- School programs to improve attendance
Composition of an ELAC Committee
- There must be enough ELAC parent members to make significant suggestions.
- The percentage of English Learner parents must reflect the percentage of English Learners at the school.
ELAC Officers
- SAUSD recommends that ELAC have a president, vice-president and secretary.
- The president helps to develop the agendas of the meetings.
- The secretary takes meeting minutes.
- ELAC must select a District English Language Advisory Committee representative to attend the DELAC meetings
Elections
- Officers can be selected by ballot or during an ELAC meeting.
- Parents of English Learners select/elect the Committee members and officials.
