Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Department offers a wide range of classes in the visual arts geared for multiple skill levels from beginner/novice to Advance Placement. Visual Arts classes at Segerstrom currently include Drawing, Painting, and Photography (at multiple levels) as well as AP Art History. By following teacher led art demonstrations, practicing those skills, collaborating with peers in gallery walks, and exhibiting art works, students gain competence and confidence in the Visual Arts that build lifelong career skills as well as enriching their school days in the most creative and enjoyable way possible. The arts bring joy to the classroom in the most unique and wonderful way. We strive to create visual arts displays that honor the creative hearts and minds of our students. We actively look for new exhibition venues to showcase our students' works collaborating with district and community partners.

Drawing & Painting

Draw Paint 1

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesThis is an entry class in the visual arts, specifically drawing and painting. The focus is on basic skills including the Elements of Art and Principles of Design (line, shape, form, etc.). We introduce students to a variety of basic art techniques and styles (like layering color to create value and give the illusion of three-dimensional form on a flat surface, for example).

Draw Paint 2

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: A or B in Draw Paint 1This is a skills-based class that builds on the lessons from Art 1 and students in Art 2 are expected to enter the class ready to build on these basic skills. Only especially skilled or prepared middle school students should expect to be admitted to Art 2.

AP Art and Design

11th - 12th, Prerequisite: A or B in Draw Paint 2This course demands a serious commitment to developing an AP level portfolio of artworks so 9th graders should be discouraged unless they are exceptionally well prepared. Arguably, the most challenging aspect of this class is the high level of self-directed art production and experimentation. AP students produce 15 artworks based on an inquiry question of their choosing PLUS 5 artworks that demonstrate their advanced technical skills.

AP Art History

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisites, previous AP experience recommended World History and/or US History are excellent preparatory or concurrent classes for AP Art History. This is a yearlong, content-based class that transfers (8) credits to the UC. Successful students should plan to spend no less than 40 mins per night studying images, reading, and preparing for class lecture, discussion, and/or group work.

Digital Photography

Digital Photography

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: no prerequisitesThis course provides introductory training in the art of digital photography. Students will gain an understanding of the artistic aspects of photography and composition. Students will learn technical skills of using digital cameras and editing using imaging software. The history of photography, elements and principles of design, and careers in photography will be studied.

Design for Social Media & Web

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: A or B in Digital PhotographyThis course is an advanced digital media course that requires students to incorporate the elements and principles of art as they create visual media projects for print and digital mediums. Through the examination and analysis of social media, students will discover the impact of their own personal digital footprint as well as the impact that social media has on society as a whole. This course will prepare students for internships in various digital media fields and as social media managers.
