Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Department includes a variety of art forms in which students develop the skills needed for creative expression in front of a live audience. Through study, training, rehearsal, and collaboration, students gain competence and confidence in performing. We offer courses in Orchestra, Concert Band, Marching Band, Tall Flags, Choir, Piano, Guitar, Modern Band, Music Appreciation, Drama, and Stage Tech. Most courses offer beginner and advanced courses so all students can find success and continue to excel. We strive to create excellent concerts and productions that challenge our students and invite our community to appreciate the students' hard work and talent.

Technical Theatre

Technical Theatre 1

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: no prerequisites

This is an introductory class and will cover the backstage aspects of theatre. (The invisible work and support every live production needs.) Learning areas include:

Advanced Technical Theatre

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: A, B, or C in Technical Theatre 1 or teacher approvalStudents will apply their skills to school wide productions. Learning areas include:

Lighting, Sound, Scenic Design
Advanced Set Construction
Supervising crews during live shows

Musical Theatre

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: no prerequisitesThis is a performance based class that focuses on training students to perform in musicals. This class is open to all interested students. Some after school performances will be required as part of the class.

Choir

Concert Choir (Mixed Choir)

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisites, beginning choir, all voice typesThis is an introductory class to singing that requires no prior music experience. In this course we learn performance skills such as, pitch, breath control, enunciation, tempo, and music reading. Students are given opportunities for field trips and performances at festivals.

Women's Choir

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisites, intermediate choir, treble voices only,
no audition needed, but encouraged, prior singing/music preference preferredThis is a beginning to intermediate class that serves as a continuation in learning for treble voices previously in concert choir, or for female singers that already have some singing experience. Students are given opportunities for field trips and performances at festivals.

Chamber Singers

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: Must audition, all voice typesIn this course, students further their vocal performance skills such as, pitch, breath control, enunciation, tempo, and music reading. Students are also given opportunities to go on field trips and perform at festivals, assemblies, etc.

Instrumental

Beginning Instrumental Music

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesLearn to play guitar or piano at the beginning level.

Honors Piano

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: A or B in Beginning Instrumental Music (Piano)Further develop your piano skills in this class.

Modern Band

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: Instrumental ExperienceModern Band is an intermediate level course in which students form groups and perform contemporary music styles such as: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Salsa, Corridos, Mariachi, and much more. Modern Band is open to students of all instrumental backgrounds including but not limited to: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Voice, Piano, Strings, Brass, Accordion, etc. Students will have many opportunities to perform both on campus and out in the community. Other topics covered in the class include songwriting, music technology, and recording arts.

Music Appreciation

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: no prerequisitesMusic Appreciation is an introductory course to music. Students will explore music’s various functionalities in order to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for all types of music. Students will examine basic music literacy and musical elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, form, and texture. Throughout the course, students apply their understanding through music composition and focus on music’s various purposes and functions through historical and cultural context.

Concert Band

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesConcert Band provides a number of performance opportunities for students in a variety of settings. Performance ensembles are a skilled effort in which each student is expected to show technical and musical growth throughout this learning process.

Marching Band

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesThis is a performance centered class. Students will learn to play an instrument (including breath control, proper embouchure, finger positioning), tempo, pitch, reading music, and marching in formation.

Tall Flags

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesThis is a performance centered class. students will learn choreography and how to manipulate rifles & tall flags.

Orchestra

Orchestra 1

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: No prerequisitesThis is an performance centered class for beginners. Students will learn to play an instrument (finger positioning and bowing technique), tempo, pitch, and to read music.

Orchestra 2

9th - 12th, Prerequisite: Orchestra 1 or experience in middle schoolThis is a performance centered class for students who have successfully completed Orchestra I or have at least a year of strings in middle school.

Orchestra 3

10th - 12th, Prerequisite: Orchestra 2This is a performance centered class for students who have successfully completed Orchestra II.

Orchestra 1 Honors

11th - 12th, Prerequisite: Orchestra 3This is a performance centered class for students who have successfully completed Orchestra III.
